A plan to replace worn-out motorcycles with new, electric models has begun in Tehran, and more than 600 units have been scrapped so far.

According to the Shahr-e-Bourse, the head of the Industrial Development and Renovation Organization (IDRO), Farshad Moghimi , announced the significant progress of the project to replace worn-out motorcycles with new and electric models, and announced that more than 600 motorcycles have been scrapped so far. The project, which is being carried out in cooperation with the traffic police, is expanding rapidly with the aim of reducing air pollution and improving motorcycle safety standards.

Special facilities for replacing worn-out motorcycles

Referring to the details of the plan, Moghimi said that riders of worn-out motorcycles can benefit from a 120 million tomans facility to buy a new gasoline motorcycle. If they decide to buy an electric motorcycle, this facility will increase to 150 million tomans. In addition, subsidies have also been considered for scrapping worn-out motorcycles, which vary depending on the type of replacement motorcycle.

He also referred to the state of the country’s worn-out vehicle fleet, saying that out of a total of 22 million worn-out vehicles nationwide, more than 11 million of them are motorcycles. Also, about 13,000 tractors over 41 years old are still in circulation, and some of these vehicles are even up to 80 years old.

The head of IDRO stated that over 505,000 vehicles have been retired in the past 20 months, and this trend continues with the implementation of various projects, especially in the field of motorcycles. According to Moghimi, the plan to replace worn-out motorcycles with gasoline and electric models is considered one of the effective measures to reduce pollution and improve the quality of urban life
